By operating at a frequency range that didn’t interfere with normal phone calls, a technology known as digital subscriber line of DSL, was able to send much more data across the wire than traditional dial-up technologies. This allowed for normal voice phone calls and data transfer to occur

DSL technologies also use their own modems. But more accurately they’re known as DSLAMs or digital subscriber line access full screen. It’s is also long running meaning connection is generally established when the DSLAM is on and it’s torn down when its off.

Two common types of DSL

• ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line.
  • features different speed for outbound and incoming data.
  • usually means faster download speed
• SDSL - Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line
  • Used by business with clients
  • more common now for business and home users
  • most SDSL technologies have an upper cap of 1.544 megabits a second.
